Roughly 95 percent of this massive urban growth will occur in less developed countries. 1 By 2030, the UN projects that proportion will reach 60 percent, totaling 4.9 billion people. In 1999, 47 percent of the world’s population (2.9 billion people) lived in urban places. (October 2001) For the first time, more half of the world’s population will be living in urban areas by the end of this decade.
